Runnymede Memorial Hampden P 4383 airborne 2113 31Jul40 from Lindholme on a Gardening mission. All contact lost at 0410 1Aug40 and it is presumed to have ditched 40-45 miles E of Flamborough Head. Six weeks later, the body of P/O Bell was washed onto the Dutch coast and he is buried in Bergen op Zoom War cemetery. His three crew-men have no known graves and are commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial. P4383 was one of two 50 Sqdn Hampden lost on this Gardening sortie.

Whitley mk V AD714 take off 00:01 from Stanton Harcourt for night circuit training. Five minutes later the bomber was seen making what appeared to be a normal approach to land when, for some reason Sgt Taney as pilot elected to overshoot. The nose of the Whitley rose as it cleared the airfield but as it turned, downwind, it turned out of control and crashed at Ferryman's Farm, Northmoor.

Short Stirling mk IV LJ939 of 190 Squadron, airborne on 19 Sep 1944 from Fairford to supply airborne operations at Arnhem as part of Operation Market Garden. Aircraft was shot down at low level over the DZ. S/L Gilliard gave order to abandon and F/O Cullen, F/O Lawton, F/S Byrne, P/O Lane and S/L Bantoft managed to bale out. The aircraft crashed 16:35 to the SW of the Bilderberg sports facility, W of Oosterbeck killing S/L Gilliard, F/O McEwen and the two RASC dispatchers from the 253 (Airborne) Comp Coy – D Breading and F Taylor

Hampden L4103 near Blaxton, Finningley.On 7th December 1940 the crew on this aircraft were undertaking a night flying exercise when the aircraft was struck by lightning whilst in the Finningley circuit. The lightning strike caused a propeller to become detached from the aircraft, this resulted in control being lost and the aircraft crashed near Blaxton, Finningley killing two airmen on board. The pilot was on attachment to 106 Squadron from 50 Squadron at the time of this incident.

Plymouth Naval Memorial At 03.26 hours on 12 June 1941, U-371 hit a vessel of the Kent or Tongario type with two torpedoes and observed it sinking after 38 minutes. This must have been the Silverpalm (Master Richard Long Pallett), which was reported missing in the North Atlantic after being seen the last time on 1 June. On 15 July, a lifeboat with eight bodies was sighted by the British trawler Cave in 62°09N/13°08W. The master, 53 crew members, eleven gunners and three passengers were lost. (The difference in dates is that the British initally posted the sink sunk on or around the 9th June, but post war records from Germany show the sinking to be on 12th June)

Merchant Navy - SS Phidias (Liverpool) 6 August 1941 , aged 31 Tower Hill Memorial At 00.01 hours on 9 June 1941 the Phidias, dispersed from convoy OB-330, was hit by one torpedo from U-46 north of the Azores, but it did not explode. The U-boat was now out of torpedoes, so they opened fire at 00.10 hours with the deck gun. The ship first fought back, but soon she caught fire and stopped shooting because the crew abandoned ship. At 00.45 hours, the U-boat ceased fire after firing 71 rounds and left the burning and sinking wreck. The master and seven crew members were killed. 40 crew members and three gunners were picked up by Embassage and landed at Sydney. |

Royal Armoured Corps - 4th County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters) 13 June 1944 , aged 25 Tilly-Sur-Seulles War Cemetery On June 13, they advanced with a battalion of the Rifle Brigade by road from Villers-Bocage and were ambushed by a detachment of Tiger tanks. A single Tiger, commanded by SS-Obersturmführer Michael Wittmann, knocked out the CLY's lead Cromwell and then took out the rest of the column, trapped in the embanked road. This was the prelude to a counter-attack by Panzer-Lehr-Division Division which forced the British out of Villers-Bocage. |
