One of the crew is buried in the Berlin 1939-1945 War Cemetery, his original grave having been found in the Heerstrasse Friedhof. The others are commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.

On 29 Feb 1944, U-358 was located by four frigates of the 1st Escort Group north-northeast of the Azores. HMS Affleck, HMS Gould, HMS Gore and HMS Garlies dropped 104 depth charges in the subsequent attacks, which were continued all throughout the night. The next day, 1 March HMS Gore and HMS Garlies had to withdraw to Gibraltar for fuel, but the other two frigates continued the attack. In the afternoon, U-358 succeeded in torpedoing and sinking HMS Gould with a Gnat torpedo, but was then forced to surface after being submerged for 38 hours and was sunk by gunfire by HMS Affleck. Gould lost its commander, six officers and 116 ratings.

Liberator KH254 collided with Liberator KG974 at Char Mahammadpur, Bengal on 21st January 1945. Both aircraft collided head on just after dawn when a formation of 16 aircraft from the Squadron was forming up for one of the biggest operation yet attempted. The squadron aircraft were forming up with aircraft from other Squadrons at a rendezvous point. The rendezvous point was an island, and aircraft were required to make a left hand circuit at a height of 5000 feet when forming up. Difficulty was experienced by some crews in forming up as the island was enveloped by ground mist. Both aircraft were fully laden with bombs when they collided at 0706 hours.There was an immediate explosion and a pall of black smoke. All on board KH254 were killed.

The bomber crashed near the final turning point at Unteressfeld, 30 km WNW of Coburg. Those killed were buried on 3 Apr 1944 at Unteressfeld.

Merlin 30 August 1946, aged 19 Owston (All Saints) Churchyard Domonie X7394 air-ambulance, a military variant of the civilian Dragon Rapide, was being used on Saturday, 30th August 1946 to transport a seriously ill patient from Abbottsinch, Glasgow to Rochester, Kent for treatment. The aircraft was due to land at RNAS Stretton near Warrington, probably to re-fuel but flew into bad weather on the first half of the flight. While flying at around 2,500 feet the aircraft flew into high ground on Broad Crag, part of the Scafell range and all on board were killed in the crash. |
