HMS Exeter was sunk in the East Indies on 1 March 1942, north west of Surabaya in Java Sea in approximate position 05º00'S, 111º00'E, by torpedoes and 8-inch gunfire of a Japanese cruiser force, and 714 of her crew were picked up and taken into captivity. He was one of 156 of the crew dying as a result of captivity.
