Charles Alan Pinder - 1623092

On the night of 21/22 January 1945 he was Flight Engineer on a Handley Page Halifax II heavy bomber, serial number JD471 coded KN-A which was to take part in the first large scale raid on the German city of Magdeburg. The aircraft of 77 squadron Bomber Command was airborne from its base at Elvington, near York (now home to the Yorkshire Air Museum) at 20:10, part of a 648 plane raid. The weather conditions were far from those of the fog forecasted, and the clear conditions made the targeting of the bomber stream by anti-aircraft flak and night-fighters easier. JD471 was hit on the port wing and the captain gave the order to bail-out. Only one of the crew managed to escape the burning plunging aircraft, and he went on to be a prisoner of war until May 1945. It was sometime later that he heard that his six crew mate had perished when the aircraft crashed near Zeitz, a small village between Schonebeck and Barby, about 15 miles south of Magdeburg.
