Lancaster mk III JB561 coded BH-B airborne 20:17 on 25 Aug 1944 from Faldingworth to bomb a target in Rüsselsheim. Cause of loss not established. Aircraft is believed to have been hit by Flak, though fierce battles with night fighters over the target area have been reported by returning crews. Aircraft crashed near the target area. Six of the crew, including their Polish Flight Engineer, F/S Jagiello, are buried in the Durnbach War Cemetery, Sgt Clayworth is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.

On 28 Nov, British 11th Brigade, supported by tanks of US 1st Armored Division, assaulted Djedeida unsuccessfully, losing 19 tanks in the process.

Suez Maru was a 4,645-ton freighter with passenger accommodation. She sailed on 25 November 1943 with 548 POW (415 British and 133 Dutch) from Ambon bound for Surabaya. The POWs were all sick men from the work-camps on the Moluccas and Ambon. Twenty were stretcher cases. On 29 November 1943 the ship was torpedoed by USS Bonefish near Kangean Island east of Madoera Island. Most of the POWs drowned in the holds of the ship. Those who escaped from the holds and left the ship were shot by the Japanese. There were no survivors.

Radio messages were received at 1936, 2005, 2020, 2120, 2220 and after that nothing further. The cause of the crash appears to have been determined as happening when the aircraft flew into a mountain at 7,000 feet whilst in cloud. The crash location is given as 42-50-06 North, 01-13-35 West, in the Pyrenees, inside Spain

Lost when the light cruiser HMS Gloucester was sunk in the Eastern Mediterranean in the Antikythera Channel about 15 nautical miles west of Antikythera island, Greece in position 35º50'N, 23º00'E by German Ju-88 and Ju-87 bombers during the German invasion of Crete. The commanding officer, 45 officers and 648 men were killed when she sank.

Sgt J L T Hinchliffe (1088305), Staff Pilot took off for an air test with as passenger, Sgt P G O Reynolds (743245) (from the training wing orderly room). Engine trouble was experienced in the circuit and the pilot indicated that he would make a single engine landing. He crashed 200 yards from the runway. The pilot was killed instantly, while the passenger died of his injuries. Accident card:Air Test. “Pilot was making forced landing on drome after engine failure on take off. He slipped in port wing 200 yards from runway. Pilot did not retract undercarriage after take off and did not feather prop. Failed to carry out set drill”.

Halifax W1272 near Catterton, Tadcaster. On 22nd September 1942 this aircraft took off from Holme on Spalding Moor airfield for a day time training exercise and during the exercise the instructor was demonstrating the effects of rudder stall (a problem which the early Halifax's suffered from). At 10.12hrs the aircraft was allowed to enter the stall but control was lost and was not recovered, the aircraft crashed near Middle Farm, Catterton, Tadcaster with the loss of the four airmen on board. As a result this accident this form of training was struck off the syllabus at Heavy Conversion courses. The pupil pilot and the rear gunner were 460 Squadron personnel converting to flying four engined bombers.

Hampden X2908 in Goole. On the night of 15th/16th November 1940 50 Squadron were tasked with bombing various targets in Hamburg. The squadron's aircraft took off from between 18.00hrs on 15th November to 02.00hrs on 16th November with this aircraft specific listed as taking off at 01.15hrs on 16th November; it was one of the last to take off from Lindholme. This crew were tasked with bombing the Altona Power Station near Hamburg, Germany. On their return to England the aircraft ran out of fuel and crashed on Dunhill Road in Goole close to the junction of Boothferry Road at 07.07hrs on 16th November 1940. Three of the crew were sadly killed but one remarkably escaped with only minor injuries.

On 19 December 1941, following the First Battle if the Syrte, Force "K", consisting of light cruisers HMS Neptune, Aurora, Penelope with destroyers Kandahar, Havock, Lance and Lively, sortied from Malta in the hope of intercepting the Italian convoy known to be heading for Tripoli. At a point 20 nautical miles E of Tripoli, Force "K" entered an Italian minefield, laid by Italian cruiser force in June 1941. At 0106 hrs Neptune, leading the British column, hit a mine and backed her engines but at 0116 another mine detonated under the stern, losing propellers and rudder and going dead in the water. This left the cruiser at the mercy of wind and water in sea state 5 (heavy whitecaps), Neptune hit another mine. A 4th mine detonated under the bridge of Neptune, 5 minutes later she capsized and sank in position 33º15'N, 13º30'E.

In March 1942, Hermes was transferred to the Eastern Fleet based at Ceylon as a unit of Force B, she then sailed for Trincomalee. On April 8th a Catalina flying boat reported the sighting of a Japanese Carrier Fleet approaching Trincomalee. The British ships then received orders to withdraw, however the following day, 91 high level bombers and dive bombers with 38 fighters from the carriers Akagi, Hiryu and Soryu attacked the British ships, 80 dive bombers with fighter escort diverged on Hermes and she and her escorting Australian destroyer HMAS Vampire were sunk south-east of Trincomalee, Ceylon in position 07º35'N, 82º05'E. Fortunately the attack had been witnessed by the hospital ship Vita which immediately set about rescuing and treating the survivors.

The cause of the crash appears to have been determined as happening when the aircraft flew into a mountain at 7,000 feet whilst in cloud. The commanding officer, 45 officers and 648 men were killed when she sank.

Sgt J L T Hinchliffe (1088305), Staff Pilot took off for an air test with as passenger, Sgt P G O Reynolds (743245) (from the training wing orderly room). Engine trouble was experienced in the circuit and the pilot indicated that he would make a single engine landing. He crashed 200 yards from the runway. The pilot was killed instantly, while the passenger died of his injuries. Accident card:Air Test. “Pilot was making forced landing on drome after engine failure on take off. He slipped in port wing 200 yards from runway. Pilot did not retract undercarriage after take off and did not feather prop. Failed to carry out set drill”.

Halifax W1272 near Catterton, Tadcaster. On 22nd September 1942 this aircraft took off from Holme on Spalding Moor airfield for a day time training exercise and during the exercise the instructor was demonstrating the effects of rudder stall (a problem which the early Halifax's suffered from). At 10.12hrs the aircraft was allowed to enter the stall but control was lost and was not recovered, the aircraft crashed near Middle Farm, Catterton, Tadcaster with the loss of the four airmen on board. As a result this accident this form of training was struck off the syllabus at Heavy Conversion courses. The pupil pilot and the rear gunner were 460 Squadron personnel converting to flying four engined bombers.

Hampden X2908 in Goole. On the night of 15th/16th November 1940 50 Squadron were tasked with bombing various targets in Hamburg. The squadron's aircraft took off from between 18.00hrs on 15th November to 02.00hrs on 16th November with this aircraft specific listed as taking off at 01.15hrs on 16th November; it was one of the last to take off from Lindholme. This crew were tasked with bombing the Altona Power Station near Hamburg, Germany. On their return to England the aircraft ran out of fuel and crashed on Dunhill Road in Goole close to the junction of Boothferry Road at 07.07hrs on 16th November 1940. Three of the crew were sadly killed but one remarkably escaped with only minor injuries.

On 19 December 1941, following the First Battle if the Syrte, Force "K", consisting of light cruisers HMS Neptune, Aurora, Penelope with destroyers Kandahar, Havock, Lance and Lively, sortied from Malta in the hope of intercepting the Italian convoy known to be heading for Tripoli. At a point 20 nautical miles E of Tripoli, Force "K" entered an Italian minefield, laid by Italian cruiser force in June 1941. At 0106 hrs Neptune, leading the British column, hit a mine and backed her engines but at 0116 another mine detonated under the stern, losing propellers and rudder and going dead in the water. This left the cruiser at the mercy of wind and water in sea state 5 (heavy whitecaps), Neptune hit another mine. A 4th mine detonated under the bridge of Neptune, 5 minutes later she capsized and sank in position 33º15'N, 13º30'E.

In March 1942, Hermes was transferred to the Eastern Fleet based at Ceylon as a unit of Force B, she then sailed for Trincomalee. On April 8th a Catalina flying boat reported the sighting of a Japanese Carrier Fleet approaching Trincomalee. The British ships then received orders to withdraw, however the following day, 91 high level bombers and dive bombers with 38 fighters from the carriers Akagi, Hiryu and Soryu attacked the British ships, 80 dive bombers with fighter escort diverged on Hermes and she and her escorting Australian destroyer HMAS Vampire were sunk south-east of Trincomalee, Ceylon in position 07º35'N, 82º05'E. Fortunately the attack had been witnessed by the hospital ship Vita which immediately set about rescuing and treating the survivors.
