Son of Samuel James Abernethy and Margaret Abernethy; Husband of Doris Abernethy, of Moor Ends, Yorkshire.
He had served several years in the Army, three of those years having been spent out in India prior to his transfer to North Africa, and the Western Desert. He was married to a Service Woman, for only 18 months prior to his death. His wife Doris was left with a son aged 6 months.

Originally buried at Baharine before being reburied in present location on 1 August 1944
While serving with the First Army in North Africa, and at that time acting as Driver of an armoured anti-tank Gun Crew, Thomas William Abemethy had successfully driven off 5 German Mark VI Tanks, which were then attacking British Troop positions, causing havoc. By rapidly deploying his fire cover, he directed and concentrated it upon those enemy forces; he thus rendered great service. Following upon this manoeuvre he was killed instantly by return fire from other opposing forces

Died in Italy (From Scots Guards, Erskine, pg 244) Italy: 1944; 1st Bn, Over the Hills to Florence: [Point 846, La Foce] - Moreover, while the Left Flank were consolidating their position on the plateau they were subjected to constant and heavy mortar fire, during which the Battalion suffered a grievious blow. The bombs killed the Commanding Officer, Lieutenant-Colonel Taylor, and Captain the Hon. W. H. Vestey, who was commanding Left Flank in the place of Major Harvey; in addition Lieutenant D. J. Forbes and sixteen men were wounded that day, and two Guardsmen killed. (William Autherson was one of the two).
