Bayeux Memorial Died in D-Day+4 after being dropped into Normandy on 6 June 1944, when the unit attacked the Merville Battery and then attacked Le Plein capturing the Chateau St Côme. On June 10th the Germans launched three attacks on the 9th Battalion positions that steadily increased in intensity over the course of the day. Between attacks artillery bombardments and snipers created a steady flow of casualties. A second attack included two Mk IV tanks. The last attack at 1900 hours was beaten back by naval gunfire support called within 500 yards of the Paras’ position. The final stages of the battle included hand-to-hand fighting. Late in the day, Lt. Col. Otway learned that the next day the 5th Black Watch Regiment of the 51st Highland Division would launch an attack from his position in the woods to take Breville. In support of their attack, the 9th Battalion’s “C” Company was ordered to occupy the Chateau St. Côme to protect the Highlanders flank during the attack. Lt. Col. Otway also ordered Lt. Pond to lead an “A” Company patrol towards Breville since the Highlanders would not have time to make a reconnaissance before their attack.

Hampden X2984 at Wold Newton, Driffield. In the early hours of 2nd March 1941 the crew of this aircraft were returning to Lindholme following Ops to Cologne. At between 03.30hrs and 03.55hrs while flying in poor visibilty the crew thought they were over the North Sea when they flew into a small plantation near Wold Newton, between Driffield and Hunmanby. The weather caused problems for a number of crews returning home with a number failing to reach their bases. The pilot of this aircraft was inexperienced flying Hampdens, and although he had 77 hours solo flying on the Hampden type he had only flown one other operational flight with the Squadron prior to this accident. The cause of the crash was put down to a navigation error although the RAF's crash card is very hard to read and the weather must have played a part in the accident. This incident occurred close to the pilot's home and undoubtably his parents would have known the location of the crash.

MV Stentor
At 22.33 and 22.38 hours on 27 Oct 1942, U-509 fired torpedoes at the convoy SL-125 (Sierra Leone to Liverpool) northwest of the Canary Islands and hit the Pacific Star and Stentor. The Stentor, originated in Lagos and was carrying 6,000 tons of West African goods and Palm Oil, was in station number 91 was carrying the Vice Commodore and six naval staff members, a crew of 107 and seven gunners (the ship was armed with one 4in, one 20mm and four machine guns), one DBS and 124 passengers, mostly service personnel, including 26 army personnel and 11 nursing sisters. The ship was hit by one torpedo on the starboard side at the bulkhead between holds number 2 and number 3. The palm oil stored in the deep tank was thrown up by the explosion and immediately caught fire, pouring into the passengers accommodation and setting the forward holds and bridge on fire. The men on the bridge were either killed or badly burned and had to be assisted to reach their lifeboat stations, but the ship suddenly sank by the bow about 8 minutes after being hit and the boat carrying the injured master capsized, drowning almost all occupants. Three lifeboats had been destroyed or were on fire, so the survivors abandoned ship in the remaining four boats and rafts. Three hours after the ship sank, HMS Woodruff began picking up survivors, disrupting the rescue work for several minutes after mistaking the sound of the motor boat for that of a U-boat and continuing throughout the night until 202 survivors were picked up. The master, the Vice Commodore 19 crew members, one naval staff member and 22 passengers, including three army personnel and four nurses were lost.
