Wellington R1662 near Rossington, Finningley. On 27th June 1941 the crew on this aircraft were undertaking a night-time cross country training exercise when the Wellington suffered engine failure in the Finningley area. The pilot may have been trying to get to Finningley or Bawtry airfield or was attempting a planned force landing in a field when the aircraft hit trees as he let down and it crashed near Rossington. The wreckage caught fire on hitting the ground which later destroyed the aircraft. The precise location is not yet known although "three miles north of Bawtry" is refered to elsewhere. One of the crew died the following day from burns received. The others survived though their names, apart from the pilots, are not yet known

On 29th June 1942 this aircraft struck the ground between Moorends and Thorne at a near vertical angle at 23.43hrs while its crew were undertaking a night cross-country training exercise. Sadly all in the aircraft were killed and the cause for the accident was never established.

Hermione 16 June 1942 , aged 25 Plymouth Naval Memorial In June 1942 HMS Hermione was operating in the Mediterranean and joined the 15th Cruiser Squadron in the east where she found herself operating with her sister ships HMS Cleopatra, HMS Dido and HMS Euryalus. The ship was tasked to cover the convoys bound for Malta from Alexandria. On June 16th, whilst returning to Alexandria, HMS Hermione was torpedoed by the German submarine U-205, North of Sollum and sank in position 33º20'N, 26º00'E. 87 crew members went down with the ship. |

The aircraft was travelling west to east, hit the dyke and went straight in. |
