Between 01.38 and 01.41 hours on 25 Aug 1942, U-605 fired four single bow and one stern torpedo from a distance of about 4000 meters at the outermost starboard column of convoy ONS-122 southeast of Cape Farewell. Detonations on three ships were observed after 5 to 7 minutes and one ship was seen to caught fire and sink within a minute after breaking in two. Two ships Katvaldis in station 92 and Sheaf Mount in station 94 were sunk in this attack.

Engine trouble was experienced in the circuit and the pilot indicated that he would make a single engine landing. He crashed 200 yards from the runway. The pilot was killed instantly, while the passenger died of his injuries. Accident card: Air Test. “Pilot was making forced landing on drome after engine failure on take off. He slipped in port wing 200 yards from runway. Pilot did not retract undercarriage after take off and did not feather prop. Failed to carry out set drill”.

Halifax mk V DG358 take odd Faldingworth for a high-level cross-country. At a little before 14:40, flying at 20,000 feet, the starboard outer engine failed and the Halifax lost height, soon being swallowed up in thick storm clouds. Icing built up and within seconds the bomber was plunging out of control, its starboard wrenched off as it fell and smashed into the starboard tail section. Crashed into fields near Cwm Farm scattering debris along the banks of the Nant-ryd-ros-lan at Bryn-y-groes, about a mile SSW of Bwlch-y-ffridd.

Pilot of Halifax III aircraft NR246 (markings ZA-Y) that took off from RAF Melbourne in Yorkshire at 12.50 pm to bomb German positions at Saint-Vith in Belgium, part of the Ardennes battle. The aircraft was presumed to be over the target at 3.35 pm and at 4.35 pm a fix was obtained in position 50.57N 15.3E. A minute later a call sign stating “tail damage” was received from approximately over Calais. It was believed the aircraft had plunged into the sea off the Kent resort of Margate at around 4.40 pm.

Halifax mk V DG358 take odd Faldingworth for a high-level cross-country. At a little before 14:40, flying at 20,000 feet, the starboard outer engine failed and the Halifax lost height, soon being swallowed up in thick storm clouds. Icing built up and within seconds the bomber was plunging out of control, its starboard wrenched off as it fell and smashed into the starboard tail section. Crashed into fields near Cwm Farm scattering debris along the banks of the Nant-ryd-ros-lan at Bryn-y-groes, about a mile SSW of Bwlch-y-ffridd.
